Simply Red

Artist Bio

Gretsch artist since 2016, Roman Roth was born in Rheinfelden, Switzerland and started playing the violin at the age of five and the drums when he was nine.

Roth studied music at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Zurich where he graduated “Magna Cum Laude”. Around that time, he started playing with acts like Eve Gallagher (UK), Susan Orus (CH), Natacha (CH) and Myron (CH), to name a few.

After a few years of teaching at public schools, Roth founded his own music school where he taught from 2001 to 2012. In 2010, he met producer Andy Wright. Andy encouraged him to move to London, which Roth did in February 2011. There he started recording and touring with singer Peter Grant and by the end of 2011/early 2012 he recorded the American Soul album with Mick Hucknall, which they toured in 2013.

In 2014, Roth was invited to record drums and percussion for the new Simply Red album Big Love and in October 2015, he started touring around the world with them.

Gretsch family member Lucas von Gretsch recently caught up with Roth for a quick interview:

“Roman has played on 10 of my tracks so far. Roman is an exceptional drummer and a very nice person to work with. He is responsive and very professional. He is technically excellent, his playing has so much feel and variation. Roman always plays just what is required to enhance and bring out specific song energy and dynamics.”
