Rare Savannah Snowstorm Has Gretsch Family California Dreamin’

In Anaheim, California, the site of the upcoming Winter NAMM Show, January 3rd was another typical January day: 73 degrees, sunny, and picture perfect.

NAMM Show promotional signs displayed at the Gretsch Company headquarters witnessed their first snowstorm.

But in Savannah, Georgia, the corporate headquarters of the Gretsch Company, the weather was far from typical. A rare winter storm slammed the Southeast coast bringing freezing rain and several inches of snow – the most snow we’ve had in 28 years!

This part of Georgia practically closed down including schools, businesses, and even the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.  Many Savannah-area residents found themselves driving in snow for the very first time.

Although it was only 27 degrees here, Dinah and I (plus two generations of the Gretsch family), are already “California Dreamin” about palm trees, 70 degree-days, and the Winter NAMM Show coming up January 25-28.

This annual event at the Anaheim Convention Center is the “Super Bowl” for the music, sound, and event technology industry. Over 7,000 brands will be represented from 125 countries. Even though the show isn’t open to the public, more than 100,000 people are expected to attend the four-day event.

Last year, I brought back several colorful, inspirational NAMM Show promotional signs that are displayed in the front windows of our headquarters. Every day I see them and they remind me of the special connecting power of music. My favorite sign reads, “Where words fail, music speaks.” I couldn’t agree more.

This year’s Winter NAMM Show will be extra special for two reasons: Gretsch is celebrating its 135th Anniversary and we’ll have three generations of Gretsch family members attending.

Dinah and I will represent the fourth generation and daughter Lena Thomas, who has worked at the Gretsch Company for 24 years, and my nephew, Lucas O’Connor from Denmark, will represent the fifth generation. We will also have two grandsons, Logan Thomas and Daniel Gretsch attending and representing the family’s sixth generation.

I can’t think of a better way to kick off our 135th anniversary celebration than to be at Winter NAMM surrounded by family and dear friends (and 70 degree weather).

California, here we come!
