About Tom Jones
For almost two decades Tom Jones of TV Jones Guitars has earned the respect and high praise of countless world-class guitar players. He is the founder of TV Jones Guitars/Pickups. For the last several years his consulting and design work have been indispensable to the Gretsch Guitar Company.
Tom’s involvement with the guitar began as a teenager. His fine skills and attention to detail landed him a position at Fender as a setup technician. He continued to make and design guitars and later worked at a high-end repair shop where he was employed until he set out on his own to start TV Jones Guitars in 1993.
For the last couple of years Tom has worked for the Gretsch Guitar Company as an independent consultant. In addition to pickup and guitar design, he also works directly with many of Gretsch’s endorsers to accurately translate their musical needs to the factory. Tom is also an integral part of the field Guitar Service Program that Gretsch currently provides to Guitar Center stores.
Tom began working on Brian Setzer’s guitars in the early 90’s. Because of his intimate knowledge of Brian’s instruments and his expertise with pickups, he was hired by Gretsch to design the pickups for the Brian Setzer Hot Rod series guitars. (Tom’s relationship with Brian and his tech Rich Modica remains strong and they continue to collaborate on many projects.) Tom also worked with Elliott Easton to develop the highly regarded Elliott Easton model guitar. Tom has also designed many of the popular Electromatic series instruments. The Gretsch New Jet model G6114 guitar, that has been receiving rave reviews, sports new TV Jones-designed pickups.
At the 2001 Winter NAMM show, Gretsch introduced the Spectra Sonic series guitars designed by Tom, with the help of Rich Modica. The series includes the G6143 Lead, G6144 C Melody, and G6145 Bass guitars. TV Jones supplies the pickups and hardware for these beautiful made-in-the-USA Gretsch instruments.
Tom’s expertise and professional manner have earned him the trust of many leading guitar players. His extensive client list includes Brian Setzer, Elliot Easton, John Fogerty, Joe Perry, Dave Alvin, Mathew Sweet, T-Bone Burnett, Samantha Phillips, Joe Walsh, Glen Frey, Don Felder, Mick Mars, Nikki Sixx, Michael Anthony, Chris Cheney, Kevin Cronin, Johnette Napolitano, Exene Cervenka, John Doe, Tony Gilkyson, Freedy Johnston, Ron Eschete, Back Street Boys, The Wallflowers, Jimmy Vavino, Doyle Dykes and many others. This impressive list continues to grow.
TV Jones Pickups is an OEM supplier to many guitar manufacturers including Koll Guitar Company, Baker Guitars, GMP Guitars, Fender Custom Shop, Jim English Guitars, Birdman Guitars, CB Hill Guitars, and TTR Design Co.
